Hi, I'm Bryon Black, and I'm the IT manager at South Coast Water District. We are a water and wastewater utility in South Orange County, and we serve the communities of Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and Capistrano Beach. We serve about 30,000 customers, and we are a 24/7 operation. The network I manage manages both the business enterprise as well as the skate and telemetry side of our business.

0:40 Security Challenges

The security challenges that we were facing prior to installing ThreatSTOP was being able to keep up with all the different types of threat factors, especially through web browsing, that type of thing with our users. They were prone to click on things that were not perhaps appropriate for work, or sometimes they would click on things that were kind of risky, and that was causing us to veer towards perhaps a vent outage, or perhaps some type of compromise that we really wanted to avoid. So we were looking for a solution to help us with that.

1:23 Security Approach

Previous to finding the ThreatSTOP solution, what we were basically doing was using firewall policies and firewall rules to add things to block lists and blacklists and those types of things, and we were doing that manually, and we were also doing our research manually. So it was a pretty arduous task for a small staff of three IT professionals, and we knew we were not able to keep up.

So we were looking for a solution that would help us do that, and we found ThreatSTOP. We found the solution with the IP defense and DNS defense to be very effective and very simple and elegant for us to be able to install and use and utilize. So it has been highly effective for us, and it has lightened our load as far as IT professionals. We have and utilize their world-class DNS and defense Intel that they have.

So, you know, I think they aggregate almost a thousand different lists and put it into a very seamless and easy-to-use basic website where we can manage and decide what we want to protect against and what we want to allow and move along that way.

It has helped us immensely, and it's helped our staff remain safe. From my perspective, one of the biggest risks we have is the staff. From an IT perspective, we can certainly protect our edge, and we can buy things like firewalls and a variety of other protection products to help protect the edge, but it doesn't really protect what our employees or our staff do where they serve, perhaps on different types of devices. It's very difficult to be able to protect that, but it's also challenging to get them educated to where they can be safe and run on their own.

What we found very helpful with ThreatSTOP was the ability to; ThreatSTOP manage what's safe, and of course, we have some input into that through configuration, but it's simplified that greatly, and it keeps our staff safe.
